REDMOND — With more than 400 team points and nearly 150 more than the next-closest team, the Redmond boys won their second-consecutive Intermountain Conference wrestling title Saturday evening at Ridgeview High School.

The Panthers had five individual IMC champions and will send 17 wrestlers to the Class 5A state championships at the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Portland, beginning Feb. 28.

“This was epic the way the kids performed,” said Redmond coach Kris Davis, who was voted as the IMC’s Coach of the Year. “We qualified 17 kids for the state tournament, which is a great number. Hopefully we can do some damage at state with that number. Today was a great day to be a Redmond Panther.”

All six IMC teams will send at least five wrestlers to the state meet. In addition to Redmond’s 17, Bend High will send 10, Mountain View and Ridgeview will have nine, Summit will send six and Caldera had five qualify.

Redmond finished with 411 team points, ahead of second-place Bend’s 271 and Mountain View’s 209. Ridgeview finished fourth with 192 points, followed by Summit (172) and Caldera (158).

“We have just been grinding our tails off doing our absolute best, whether that is dieting or working out,” said Redmond senior and 138-pound IMC champion Mason Thynes. “We have a brotherhood here at Redmond that no matter what we do we are going to work as hard as we can.”

Thynes, one of the three Most Outstanding Wrestlers from the tournament, had two first-round pins and a second-round pin. In the championship match, he beat his teammate JJ Browning in a 9-4 decision.

“Wrestling your own teammate was tough,” Thynes said. “One of our main goals was to wrestle our hearts out. We are both going to work our butts off at state and hopefully wrestle again in the state finals.”

Senior Ryder Lee (126-pounder), senior Billy Jackson (132), sophomore Gannon McNulty (157) and senior Orinn Hubbard (190) all won their respective weight classes for the Panthers.

“When kids step up, do the right things and do what they need to do, it’s a great thing,” Davis said.

Bend High had four IMC champions. The Larwin brothers, senior 150-pounder Eric and sophomore 175-pounder Leif, each repeated as IMC champions. Eric Larwin has a perfect 28-0 record on the season and Leif Larwin was named one of the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers.

The battle for the 215-pound title came down to a pair of Lava Bears, and senior Logan Hartman got the better of teammate Uriel Valdez with a 7-5 decision. Junior Lukas Quade capped off the tournament with a second-round pin in the 285-pound championship match.

Caldera and Mountain View each had two IMC champions. Sophomore Easton Waldron won the 113-pound title, while defending state champ Aiden Nelmes won the 120-pound weight class to help the Cougars finish with 209 points.

Caldera’s Jacob Smoker won the 106-pound title and junior Denny Dean Jr. not only won the 144-pound title, but was named one of the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers. Ridgeview had one champion, junior 165-pounder Logan Lee.
