The Wardens bring Canadian Rock Mountain country-folk to Bend’s Tower Theatre

There have been some accurately named bands over the years: Metallica, The Beach Boys, The Art of Noise and Rage Against the Machine come to mind.

The Wardens might be the most accurately named of all, though not for musical reasons. (This ain’t prison-polka.) Both co-founders of this low-key country-folk band are, in fact, actual wardens in Canadian national parks, and their music is inspired by the land they’ve protected for decades.

Guitarist Scott Ward works as a horseman, search-and-rescue dog handler and technical alpine specialist in Banff National Park. Multi-instrumentalist Ray Schmidt has served in a number of different parks and is currently working with wildlife — including grizzly bears! — in Jasper National Park.

Those two are joined by a fiddler named Scott Duncan, and together, the three make music that’s twangy, easygoing and tuneful. They’ve played festivals all over North American and shared the stage with Canadian giants like Pharis & Jason Romero, Blue Rodeo and Ian Tyson.

The Wardens: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, doors open 6:30 p.m., $24-$44, Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall Street, Bend, towertheatre.org.
