Caldera’s McKean can join rare six-title club at state swim meet; Bend girls go for three-peat

Campbell McKean has a chance to cement himself as one of the state’s all-time greatest swimmers this Friday and Saturday at the Class 5A state championships.

Only eight swimmers in Oregon history have won six or more individual state titles. McKean, a Caldera senior with four individual state titles already under his belt, can join that exclusive club on Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.

“I’m feeling pretty good and pretty rested heading into state,” McKean said. “I’m pretty excited to see what my teammates and I can accomplish.”

The University of Texas-bound McKean has already etched his name into the state record books. Last year as a junior he set the all-time state meet record — by more than five seconds — in the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 41.19 seconds).

He also set an all-time record in the 100 breaststroke (51.72 seconds) by multiple seconds.

As a sophomore, he won his first two state titles in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. This weekend, he will attempt to claim his second state title in the 100 backstroke (his admittedly weakest event) and vie for his first 100 butterfly state record.

“My personal best is already faster,” Campbell said about the 100 butterfly record time. “We will see how close I can get to that. I want to set a personal best in the (100 backstroke). But I also want to see if our (400 freestyle) relay can place better than we did last year or beat our time.”

David Douglas’s Doug Ainslie started the six-title club in the mid 1970s. Summit’s Tommy Brewer is the most recent to join the club and holds the record by winning eight individual titles from 2012 to 2015.

Two more state titles and McKean is in the club.

On top of that, McKean said he wants to see if he and his Caldera teammates on the 400 freestyle relay can improve on last year’s third-place finish (3:25.40).

“We’ve always had a different relay every year, so I’m excited to see how this one works out,” McKean said.

McKean is not the only swimmer chasing milestones this weekend. The Bend High girls are aiming for their third consecutive state team title, a feat accomplished by only 11 teams in state history. The Lava Bears are also swimming for the program’s seventh state title, which only three other Oregon teams have done.

Bend is certainly favored to claim that three-peat and break some records along the way. The Lava Bears have the fastest seed times in all three of the relays and five of the eight individual events.

Bend juniors Emma Bronson and Maddie Thornton and senior Hadley Hayes are well within reach of breaking multiple state records. Bronson already holds the 5A record in the 100 butterfly, Thornton is nearing 5A records in both the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke, and Hayes will have a chance in the 100 breaststroke.

Hayes, Bronson and Thornton were three of the four swimmers in the state record-setting 200 medley relay last year, and will attempt to break their own record.

The Class 5A state meet prelims start at 9 a.m. on Friday and the finals begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
