Random Rab is based in Colorado and he came up through San Francisco’s underground music scene in the 1990s.
He has performed at festivals all over the world, including Burning Man, Shambhala, Boom and the Envision Festival in Costa Rica, where he was known for his sunrise sets. This is a guy who once headlined a gathering “to celebrate the dawning of a New Era” at the Great Pyramids in Egypt!
He has made more than a dozen albums over the past 25 years, and his music has been used for projects by National Geographic, Adobe, Google, Red Bull and Teton Gravity Research. Those are massive brands, and you don’t get those gigs unless you know what you’re doing.
The point is Random Rab has been there and done that. And on Friday night, he’ll return to Bend’s Volcanic Theatre Pub for an evening of deeply chilled, undeniably groovy and highly danceable music.
In a world where a lot of electronic music is driven by beat drops, big bass and the buildup and release of tension, Rab does things differently. His sound is hypnotic, immersive and meditative, incorporating downtempo, ambient, visual elements, live vocals and live instruments without sacrificing the pulse needed to make bodies move.
If an evening of pure electronic bliss sounds good to you at the moment, Random Rab is your man.
Random Rab, with Lapa and Tarekeith: 8 p.m. Friday, doors open 7 p.m., $25, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
