Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters play West Coast Americana in Bend

Ashleigh Flynn is a familiar name on the Oregon music scene, thanks in large part to the many years she spent recording and performing as a solo artist.

But things have changed.

“At first, I did my own sort of troubadour-y type of thing,” she said in a recent interview. “Whereas now, I’m squarely interested in playing in this band.”

The Riveters

That band is Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters, who will perform at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend Saturday night to celebrate the release of their new album, “Good Morning, Sunshine,” earlier this month. The Riveters are a revolving group of mostly female-identified players led by Flynn, of course, and also guitarist Nancy Luca, who produced the album.

Flynn is effusive when talking about her focus on playing with the Riveters.

“I love my bandmates. I love their attitude,” she said.

“Nancy … is just a joy to play with. She came up under the tutelage of (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist) Mike Campbell, and you can hear it,” Flynn continued. “Playing with a band just brings a different energy than when you play on your own with a harmonica and an acoustic guitar. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”

The Riveters initially built some momentum in the late 2010s, releasing a self-titled debut in 2018 and playing shows to support it throughout 2019 before a series of fits and starts “kind of crushed us,” Flynn said. There was a business deal gone sideways, an amicable drummer departure and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘We’re back’

But “Good Morning, Sunshine” marks the start of a new era for the band.

“It’s, ‘we’re back,’ but it’s also ‘we are here,’” Flynn said. “And it’d be a good idea to pay attention because our point is to create fun and to create joy and to have fun and be joyful while we’re doing it.”

“Against whatever odds and against whatever ugliness is rearing its head … we are here to usher in the new age with joy,” said Ashleigh Flynn. (Submitted photo)

You can hear fun and joy throughout the new album, which is packed wall to wall with upbeat and catchy Americana songs that stride confidently across the blurry lines between folk, country, pop, rock and soul. There’s also a twangy cover of “Shake The Stranger” by Lavender Country, the iconic queer country band whose leader, Patrick Haggerty, passed away in 2022.

Haggerty was a friend and a mentor to Flynn, and she is committed to carrying forth his bravery and his spirit.

“Part of the band’s mission is we show up, and we’re all women. There are a bunch of queer people in the band. Over the years, we’ve started playing with some trans women. So when we go on tour, sometimes, we are at risk,” she said.

“We know that and we do it anyway because we want to share the joy that we have when we play together,” Flynn continued. “Against whatever odds and against whatever ugliness is rearing its head — against the last gasp of an old patriarchal model — we are here to usher in the new age with joy and with our people.”
