The historic Old Stone Church on Franklin Avenue in downtown Bend caught fire Wednesday morning, causing up to $500,000 in damage to Web Cyclery, the business that operates in the building.
The fire was small and began as the result of a failed florescent light fixture in the attic, according to Bend Fire & Rescue.
Staff working at the time noticed the smoke and promptly stopped the flames with a fire extinguisher while calling 911.
When Bend Fire & Rescue personnel arrived, everyone had evacuated from the building and crews found the attic space filled with smoke. Hoses were run inside the building to extinguish the rest of the fire while a ladder truck opened holes in the roof to speed up the process. The fire was fully extinguished 30 minutes after crews arrived.
Bend Fire & Rescue lauded Web Cyclery’s staff for their quick actions that prevented the fire from growing.
“They investigated the smell as soon as it was known. They used an extinguisher for what was a small fire to start off with. But most importantly, they started evacuating the building and calling 911 at the same time another employee was using the extinguisher. These actions ensured everyone was out safe and the fire department was on its way in the event the extinguisher wasn’t enough, as it turned out to be,” Deputy Fire Marshall Dan Derlacki said in a news release.
Damage to the building is estimated to be about $25,000, but several high-end mountain bikes were damaged, inflating the potential losses to $500,000. Additional losses as a result of smoke damage are still being assessed.
