It had been more than two decades since an Intermountain Conference team had beaten Summit boys tennis in a dual meet.
That streak was snapped this week.
Caldera put an end to the Storm’s winning streak that began in 2004 with a 9-8 win Tuesday night on Summit’s home court.
“It was pretty fun for our kids,” said Caldera boys tennis coach Ryan Cruz. “Going into that match we knew that streak was on the line. I thought we had an opportunity to at least compete and give ourselves a chance. I just put it on our kids to go in and play your game and swing your racket.”
After eight matches (four singles and four doubles) each squad had four wins. Caldera swept the singles matches and Summit swept the doubles. The tiebreaker came down to which team won the most sets. Of the 17 total sets played over the eight matches, the Wolfpack won nine of them, just edging the Storm 9-8 in sets.
“It came down to our fourth doubles match,” Cruz continued. “Our fourth doubles ended up stepping up and taking the second set which solidified the win.”
The Wolfpack won all four singles matches. Senior Aiden Cruz beat senior Austin Berg (6-3, 6-3), senior Thijis Van Kuik defeated senior Ryder Brown (6-1, 6-1), sophomore Max Voige took down sophomore Hairron Young (6-2, 6-0) and junior Levi Waters beat senior Reed Wuepper (6-4, 6-0).
The Storm won all four doubles matches. Seniors Alex Linddsay and Nolan Rife beat senior Matthew Burkhardt and sophomore Van Giessler (6-1, 6-1), seniors Bobby Bloom and Joey Virgillo beat sophomores Josyah Mertins and Ian Waters (6-3, 6-1) and seniors Malachi Keel and Gabe Lezotte took down seniors Micah Slate and Boden Gilbert (6-2, 6-0).
Junior Kristjan Burke and freshman Joshua Segesta of Summit won the match over sophomore Jaxson Timmerman and junior Cooper Pardo of Caldera (6-3, 6-7, 10-7) to give the Storm the doubles sweep over the Wolfpack. But by winning the second set, Timmerman and Pardo secured the historic dual meet win for the Wolfpack.
“There was definitely some excitement for our kids once we got that set,” Cruz said. “In our pre-match talk I shared that we had a great opportunity to be on Summit’s court and be streak busters. And our guys did it. It was pretty special for our senior class who have worked so hard the last four years. This is something I know our boys will remember for the rest of their lives.”
