A La Pine man was arrested Wednesday after deputies investigated reports of animal abuse involving a 5-month-old Dachshund puppy, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
John Coe Richardson, 75, faces charges of first-degree aggravated animal abuse and second-degree animal abuse. Deputies began investigating April 26 after a witness reported seeing Richardson beat a dog with a shovel at his home on Sparks Drive in south Deschutes County. The incident was recorded on video, deputies said.
Richardson was uncooperative when deputies first contacted him and they were unable to seize the dog at that time. The case was forwarded to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for legal review. Deputies coordinated with prosecutors to develop a safety plan and arrested Richardson at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Three dogs, including the puppy, were removed from Richardson’s home and taken to the Humane Society of Central Oregon for evaluation.
Richardson was booked into the Deschutes County jail. The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
