The Deadman Canyon fire northeast of Madras should be fully contained by this evening if all goes well, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Lisa Clark said Thursday.

The fire, about 17 miles northeast of Madras, has burned an estimated 3,869 acres. Containment was reported at 50 percent Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, crews are continuing to fight two fires northeast of Prineville and a new fire north of Maupin.

The Sutton Mountain fires roughly 35 miles northeast of Prineville have grown to more than 2,300 acres. Because of rugged terrain, suppression efforts are concentrated on the northeast side, where the fire is closest to private land.

The Brown Road Fire has grown to 3,000 acres. That fire started nine miles north of Maupin along the east side of the Lower Deschutes River on Thursday afternoon.

Campgrounds were evacuated and Highway 216 from the Deschutes River east to Brown Road was closed. Approximately 80 firefighters are trying to contain the fire.

Firefighters with the Bureau of Land Management and the Sherman Country Rural Fire Department were first put on the fire, but numerous resources were shifted from the Deadman Canyon Fire to help, Clark said.

The fire ignited near a boat launch on the canyon bottom. Officials suspect the fire was started by humans, but the cause is still under investigation.
