Pitch your tent for REI’s used-gear sale

REI in Bend’s Old Mill District will host one of its popular used-gear sales Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — or until the product runs out.
Supervisor Jake Wiley said the stuff for sale is mostly items that were returned under REI’s 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. Condition varies from well-worn shoes to brand new skis customers took home and then realized “they didn’t have enough money for and returned.”
Discounts range from 50 percent to 90 percent off original retail pricing. All items sold at the sale are “as is” and unreturnable.
The sale is “very popular.” Wiley said. “So popular people will pitch tents on the sidewalk the night before.” He said some enthusiastic shoppers will even use binoculars while they’re in line to scope out the best deals. The first 150 people in line will be given numbers in the early morning to assure that no places are held at the front of the line.
Used-gear sales are held three to four times per year, and although anyone can enter the sale, only members can make purchases. The REI membership — $20 one-time fee for life — can be paid at the time of purchase.
