Courses: PGA West, Arnold Palmer Private Course (6,950 yards, par 72), PGA West, Jack Nicklaus Private Course (6,951 yards, par 72), Bermuda Dunes Country Club (7,017 yards, par 72) and SilverRock Resort (7,578 yards, par 72).

Purse: $5.1 million. Winner’s share: $918,000.

Television: Golf Channel (Today-Friday, noon-3 p.m., 6-9 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 1-4 p.m., 7-10 p.m.).

Last year: D.J. Trahan won his second PGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 65 at The Classic Club for a three-stroke victory over Justin Leonard.

Last week: Zach Johnson won the Sony Open for his second victory in his last six PGA Tour starts, beating Adam Scott and David Toms by two shots.

Notes: Phil Mickelson, the 2002 and 2004 winner, is skipping the 50th edition of the 90-hole pro-am tournament. Anthony Kim withdrew because of a sore shoulder. … David Duval shot a 59 on the Palmer course in the final round of his 1999 victory. … Joe Durant set the PGA Tour’s 90-hole record in 2001 with a 36-under 324 total. … Past champions Fred Couples (1998) and Mike Weir (2003) are making their first starts of 2009.

Champions Tour

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CHAMPIONSHIP

Site: Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

Schedule: Friday-Sunday.

Course: Hualalai Resort Golf Club (7,053 yards, par 72).

Purse: $1.8 million. Winner’s share: $300,000.

Television: Golf Channel (Friday, 3:30-6 p.m., 9:30 p.m.-midnight; Saturday, 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m.; Sunday, 4:30-7 p.m., 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m.).

Last year: Fred Funk won the season-opening tournament, birdieing the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a two-stroke victory over Allen Doyle.

Last week: Fuzzy Zoeller successfully defended his Champions Skins Game title with new partner Ben Crenshaw, taking a dozen skins and $500,000 on the back nine to beat first-day leaders Greg Norman and Jay Haas.

Notes: The tournament is the first official event of the season. … In 2006, Loren Roberts made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a course-record 11-under 61 and a one-stroke victory. Roberts had a 25-under 191 total to break the tour record for relation to par in a 54-hole event and tie the stroke mark.

QATAR MASTERS

Site: Doha, Qatar.

Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.

Course: Doha Golf Club (7,388 yards, par 72).

Purse: $2.5 million. Winner’s share: $416,665.

Television: Golf Channel (Thursday-Sunday, 6:30-9:30 a.m.).

Last year: Australia’s Adam Scott finished with an 11-under 61 for a three-stroke victory over Henrik Stenson.

Last week: England’s Paul Casey won the Abu Dhabi Championship for the second time in three years.

Notes: South Africa’s Retief Goosen, the 2007 winner, is coming off a victory Sunday in the Sunshine Tour’s Africa Open. … Ernie Els, the 2005 champion, also is in the field along with Scott, Casey, Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Aaron Baddeley, Boo Weekley, Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose and Colin Montgomerie.

LPGA Tour

HSBC LPGA BRAZIL CUP

Site: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Schedule: Saturday-Sunday.

Course: Itanhanga Golf Club (6,447 yards, par 72).

Purse: $500,000. Winner’s share: TBA.

Last year: Inaugural event.

Notes: Park and Hannemann, LPGA Tour regulars from Brazil, received sponsor exemptions into the unofficial tournament. Carvalho earned a spot as Brazil’s top amateur. … The exhibition event is the LPGA Tour’s first in Brazil. … The tour will open the official season Feb. 12-14 with the SBS Open at Turtle Bay in Hawaii.
