TACOMA, Wash. — Flying debris fatally hit a young boy and injured a man in the first day of a three-day monster truck show at the Tacoma Dome, officials said.
Both of those who were hit Friday night were taken to the hospital, where the 6-year-old boy died. He was identified by the Pierce County medical examiner’s office as Sabastian Hizey, of Puyallup.
Jolene Davis, a Fire Department spokeswoman, told The News Tribune of Tacoma there was “some sort of accident,” but she had no details on that or on the nature of the injuries to the boy and man.
The outfit promoting the show, Feld Motorsports of Aurora, Ill., would not discuss details.
“Our company follows strict safety guidelines designed to protect both spectators and competitors alike,” said Bill Easterly, Feld’s senior director of operations, in a statement issued Friday night.
The remaining four Monster Jam shows, two each on Saturday and Sunday, remained on the Tacoma Dome schedule.
Christine Moe told King 5 Television of Seattle a truck came apart while heading toward the end of the grandstands during the freestyle competition right after intermission.
“Parts were falling off, and a piece flew up and hit a little boy,” Moe said.
“I talked to the people sitting next to them. Their little girl had blood all over them. It was just so horrible,” she said. “You just saw the mother just sitting there holding her son, and the whole top of his head was just gushing with blood.”
The injured man was “laying on his side, kicking his legs,” Laurie Deranleau, 32, a nurse from Westport who was watching the show, told The News Tribune.
Witnesses said a red truck was doing doughnuts, driving in tight circles, when debris flew 30 to 50 feet over a safety barrier and into the stands.
“It hit him (the boy) in the head, and there was blood everywhere,” witness Adrian Kelley told King 5. “There was everybody running down towards him, and people were putting towels over his head.”
“The poor dad was just collapsed at the top of the stairs,” Moe said.
Some told the TV station they had to throw cups off the stands to get the attention of medics.
“They didn’t even stop the damn show,” Moe said. “They just kept going. We grabbed our kids and just beelined out of there.”
Many spectators left after the accident, witnesses said.
“I thought that (continuing the show) was really rude,” Deranleau said. “Everybody sitting around thought they should have dropped the show and gave the family some respect. Nobody was paying attention to the show.”
