Prineville Armory is off closure list

The Oregon Military Department, which is looking to slash nearly $4.8 million from its budget, has taken Prineville off the list of cities that could see their armories closed.
The department operates 50 armories around the state that are used by the Oregon National Guard and for community and private functions. After the Legislature’s Joint Ways and Means Committee released a new budget proposal last week, the department outlined a list of likely cuts, including four armories that would be selected from a list of eight to be closed — including those in Prineville and Redmond.
But in a news release issued by the department late this week, the Prineville Armory, which was recently converted from a youth correctional facility, had been removed from the list. Armories still on the chopping block are those in Redmond, Burns, Coos Bay, Lebanon, Milton-Freewater, Newport and St. Helens.
