CAROLE ANN MATTSON 1958 PAGEANT QUEEN
Carole Ann Mattson began her reign as Queen of Bendonia, to preside over the 1958 Fourth of July Water Pageant, at the colorful Parade of Princesses on Saturday night. The coronation program was held in the Bend Senior High School Auditorium, with a large audience attending. The Queen’s Ball followed in the high school cafeteria.
Princesses are Betty Barnett, Kela Hinds, Olga Niemi and Jane Nolan.
Queen Carole was crowned by blond Janis Baet, last year’s queen. Mrs. Charles E. Boardman is the official chaperone.
Each of the five queen candidates made a short talk before the group retired backstage to name the queen. The court members themselves made the selection, and the big moment came when the curtains were opened to reveal Queen Carole in the place of honor. Junior attendants for the ceremony were Toni Jaques, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Jaques, who was flower girl, and Jeffrey Scott Maudlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Maudlin, crow bearer.
Mayor Mel Rogers presented Queen Carole the key to the city of Bend, and also a key to the city of Portland, which was given to the group by Mayor Terry Schrunk, when the court visited in the City of Roses on an official tour.
Pageantarian escorts for the coronation ceremony were Oscar J. Murray, Vince Genna, C.V. Goodwin, E.M. Berg, Alan R. Libby, Ira Moore and J.R. Acheson.
Kessler Cannon was master of ceremonies. There were numbers by the Bend Municipal Band, directed by Joseph Haugen, and other local entertainers took part in the program. Miss Mary Cowden and Miss Jackie Bowlus danced, and Miss Kathy Boardman, Dennis Marvin and Danny Bucknum sang solos. A flute trio composed of the Misses Bertie Kirk, Sherry Jorgenson and Carol Whitney played. Accompanists were Mrs. R.W. Snider, Mrs. R.C. Caryl and Miss Sally Stearns.
Queen Carole and her court will attend all the Water Pageant events, and will ride the swan and cygnet floats in the river fete Friday and Saturday nights, July 4 and 5.
