Jack R. Lutz died on Saturday, November 22, 2008 surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 26, 1928 in Bellingham, WA to Vanira and Irene (Davidson) Lutz. His mother was a direct descendant of Elijah Davidson, who discovered the Oregon Caves. Jack graduated from high school in Grants Pass, OR; received his bachelors degree in education from SOC and a masters in counseling from the U of O. Jack married Barbara Smith on January 11, 1947 and moved to Bend in 1953 to begin a long teaching, counseling and coaching career. He was employed by the Bend School District for 39 years. Jack began teaching and coaching at Bend Junior High School, then Bend High School. He started with Mountain View High School the year it opened and retired from that school in 1992. He coached Bend High football and track. At Mountain View High School he sent several basketball teams to the State Tournaments in the late 80s and early 90s. Jack was a member of the Elks Lodge and the First United Methodist Church, was involved in the Elks Annual Hoop Shoot Tournament and enjoyed his involvement in multiple ministries at the church since his retirement.
He loved deer hunting, fishing and waterskiing. He enjoyed construction; he built two houses, a cabin and many pieces of furniture. But highest on his priority list of loves was his family. Mr. Lutz is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Don of Portland; daughter, Linda Lawrence of Olympia, WA ; granddaughter, Tamora Lawrence of Olympia; his brothers, Don Hedgepeth of Salem, and Norm Hedgepeth of Grants Pass; and sisters, Shirley Landauer of McMinnville and Dorthy Dolmage of Medford; and his dog, Joey, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Jack was preceded in death by his parents.
Public viewing will be from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, November 28 at Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home. A memorial service for Jack will take place at First United Methodist Church, 680 NW Bond in Bend on Saturday, November 29 at 2 p.m. A trust fund has been established at Bank of the Cascades in Jacks name to benefit senior graduates of Mountain View and Bend High who plan to major in education.
