David Allan Coe: Still a son of the South

The names of country music’s legends are familiar to just about anyone: Johnny Cash. George Jones. Merle Haggard. Waylon Jennings.

But how about David Allan Coe?

Coe, who’ll perform Wednesday in Bend, is well known, certainly, but he falls short of the household-name status of many of his contemporaries.

Even so, you know David Allan Coe’s music. You can sing “Take This Job and Shove It,” which was a big hit for Johnny Paycheck. But Coe wrote it. You might also be able to hum along with Tanya Tucker’s hit “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone).” Coe wrote that one, too.

In fact, according to his MySpace profile, Coe, a native Ohioan, has written more than 10,000 songs, including hits for Cash and Jones. The discography page on his Web site lists nearly 100 releases over the last 40 years. And at 69 years old, the dude is still out there on the road, playing songs that people may associate with other artists, but that are all David Allan Coe.
