Panthers’ girls soccer scores early, often in win

REDMOND — Redmond jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes against Central Valley Conference opponent McKay on Tuesday and never looked back, defeating the Royal Scots girls soccer team 8-1.

The Panthers (3-0 CVC, 4-0 overall) got on the scoreboard in the third minute when Jenna Stewart scored the game’s first goal. Crystal Foster put a ball in the net at the eight-minute mark, and Sydney Tucker scored for Redmond in the 13th minute. Additional goals by Bev Schlegel and Halie Gobler gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead before McKay scored just before halftime, making the game 5-1.

Redmond kept the pressure on after the half, though, as Stewart, Tucker and Gobler each recorded second-half goals.

The Panthers play at West Salem on Saturday.

JUNCTION CITY — The Hawks took the Tigers to overtime, but Junction City scored three goals in the extra period. “We just ran out of gas,” said La Pine coach Scott Winslow. Maria Ramirez scored in the 20th minute of the game to give the Hawks (1-2 Sky-Em League, 1-2 overall) a 1-0 lead. Junction City equalized in the 42nd minute before taking control of the match in overtime. La Pine plays at Cottage Grove on Thursday.

ALBANY — With three minutes left in the game, Bre Vaughn scored off a pass from Charlieann Herkshan to give Madras the 1-0 victory and its first win of the season. “The team just pulled it together today,” said Madras coach Debbie Taylor. The White Buffaloes (1-3 overall) host Woodburn on Saturday.

Sisters 0

SISTERS — The Outlaws played evenly with the Spartans for most of the game, but Marist scored in the 81st minute to take the win. Mindy Marr and Hattie Tehan both excelled for Sisters, according to coach Nik Goertzen. The Outlaws (1-1 Sky-Em League, 2-1 overall) play at Elmira on Thursday in another league match. BOYS SOCCER

SALEM — The Panthers dropped to 0-3 in the Central Valley Conference after giving up three first-half goals to the Royal Scots. “We’re just not playing good soccer right now,” said Redmond coach Hector West. The Panthers (1-3 overall) host West Salem on Friday.

EUGENE — The Storm dropped its second game in a row, falling to 1-2-1 on the season. Summit was also shut out on Thursday when it lost to Mountain View 3-0. The Storm hosts Crater on Saturday. VOLLEYBALL

SALEM — Laurel Welborn led the Panthers to their first Central Valley Conference win of the season, registering nine kills and four blocks. Jesslyn Albrecht contributed 21 assists and three blocks, and Kurin Matter added 29 digs for Redmond. The Panthers (1-2 CVC) host West Salem on Thursday.

The host Storm improved to 2-1 in the Intermountain Conference, winning its second consecutive league match of the season. Nat Scheller led the Lava Bears (1-3 IMC) with 12 kills and nine digs. Summit hosts reigning Class 5A state champion Crook County on Thursday and Bend plays Mountain View at home on the same day.

MADRAS — The White Buffaloes dropped to 0-3 in Intermountain Conference play with their four-game loss to the Bulldogs. Penny Danzuka led Madras with 14 assists and 10 digs, and Hannah Mikkelson added eight kills. “We had a lot of kills, but a lot of errors too,” said White Buffaloes coach Caron Smith. Madras plays at The Dalles-Wahtonka on Thursday.

EUGENE — The first loss of the season for the reigning Class 4A state champs was a tough one, said Sisters coach Diane Bremer after the Sky-Em League loss. Junior outside hitter Haylee Schaab was the Outlaws’ kill leader with 15, followed by Felicia Pledger with 10. Junior libero Jessica Snow added 21 digs, and sophomore setter Kaity Douglass posted 26 assists. The Outlaws (1-1 Sky-Em) travel to La Pine on Thursday.

CULVER — Despite the loss, Bulldog coach Wendy Thompson said it was the best match her girls have played all season. Kelsie Stafford posted 11 digs, three kills, three aces and one block and Kymber Wofford added 13 digs, four kills, two blocks and one ace. Culver hosts East Linn Christian on Thursday.

SILVER LAKE — The White Tigers improved to 2-0 overall with a win over the Cowgirls junior varsity squad. Alyssa Phillips served three aces to lead Central Christian. The White Buffaloes are at Cascade Locks on Thursday.
