MADRID, Spain — Alberto Contador of Spain won the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, completing a sweep of cycling’s three major races after capturing this year’s Giro d’Italia and the 2007 Tour de France.

The 25-year-old Astana rider finished the Vuelta in 80 hours, 40 minutes, 23 seconds, beating teammate Levi Leipheimer — the U.S. rider who won Central Oregon’s Cascade Cycling Classic in July —by 1:01. CSC cyclist Carlos Sastre of Spain was third, 4:31 behind.

Contador achieved the three-race feat in a record 15 months, beating Bernard Hinault’s previous mark of 26 months.

Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil and Felice Gimondi also won cycling’s three top races.
