When medical emergencies arise, it can be difficult and frustrating for loved ones to keep their friends and family apprised of the patient’s status. Those at the hospital may feel overwhelmed by the need to make multiple phone calls to provide updates, while those further removed from the situation feel unsure about when to call so as not to be intrusive. CaringBridge.org offers a reasonable solution.

The free site allows individuals to create a patient-specific site that can be accessed through the Internet. Visitors must know the exact name of the site they’re trying to reach, and the author can add password protection, create a “by invitation only” list or block specific unwanted visitors. The site can then be updated as needed. Visitors can also post greetings and messages of support. The free service is supported mainly through donations from those who use the site. It can be used for any life-changing event, including an ongoing illness, military deployment or an international adoption.
