LA PINE — For the second year in a row, senior defensive back Cole Falline sealed a La Pine Sky-Em League victory over Elmira with an interception in the closing minute as the Hawks won 36-29 on Friday night.
La Pine led by a touchdown with 55 seconds left when Elmira quarterback Brodie Davis threw a pass to a Falcon receiver near the Hawks’ end zone, trying to steal the win with a touchdown followed by a two-point conversion.
Hawks coach Rusty Zysett recounted what he said from the sideline two plays prior: “Boy, I wish Cole would do the same thing he did last year.”
Zysett’s wish came true. Falline intercepted the Davis pass on the 2-yard line to seal the La Pine victory — nearly the same type of play he made on a pass from the same quarterback that secured an 18-13 Hawks victory a year ago.
Senior wide receiver Jordan Fugate led the Hawk offense, catching two touchdown passes from junior quarterback Ty Slater and rushing for another touchdown for La Pine (1-1 Sky-Em, 4-1 overall). Teammate Jake Logan was on the receiving end of the other two Hawk touchdowns — both pass plays for more than 50 yards.
Elmira scored three times before La Pine got on the board. But the Hawks scored five of the game’s next seven touchdowns.
La Pine plays at Marist of Eugene next Friday.
