Horse health classes: Offered in Bend, Redmond and Prineville through Central Oregon Community College’s Community Learning program. Learn from a local veterinarian about horse nutrition, vital signs, recognizing emergency situations, bandaging and first aid, vaccinations, and health problems such as colic and founder. Use your new knowledge to create a basic health care routine to keep your horse well. Six weekday evening sessions at locations in Bend, Redmond and Prineville. TRAINING THE INNER RIDER CLINIC: Clinical psychologist Lucy Griffith uses research-based approaches to help participants improve their consistency and confidence both in and out of the ring. WILD HORSE ADOPTIONS: Nearly 40 wild horses will be offered for adoption this month at three mustang events in Oregon, including two in Central Oregon. The July 18-19 event will include 25 to 30 horses and will take place in Molalla. The July 19-20 event will include two horses and will take place in Prineville. The July 26-27 event will include eight horses and will take place in Bend. OREGON HIGH DESERT CLASSICS: Central Oregon’s largest and longest-running horse shows, the 19th annual Classics will be staged once again at the J Bar J Boys Ranch, 62895 Hamby Road in Bend. World-class equestrian talent will take part in the international Class A hunter/jumper competitions, which run Wednesday through Sunday on consecutive weeks. Featured events are two Grand Prix competitions, set for each Saturday at 5 p.m. and including prize purses of $20,000 and $25,000. NORTHWEST REINED COW HORSE ASSOCIATION COMPETITION: The NWRCHA Futurity and Reiny Day Quarter Horses Derby continues through Sunday at Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte, with full days of competition starting at 8 a.m. Top horsemen and equine athletes from around the country are taking part in reined cow horse competition. Professional horse trainers and amateur riders demonstrate the ability of horses age 3 and older to outrace and outsmart a cow, as well as to perform challenging maneuvers. The event, sponsored by Penny Knight and Drag N Fly Ranch of Terrebonne, and Reiny Day Quarter Horses of Fall City, Wash., includes a trade show and booths featuring tack and cowboy gear.
