COCC baseball set for home openers

It wasn’t all about wins or losses, but Central Oregon Community College came back with some of each from a three-day club baseball event staged last weekend in Mesquite, Nev.
The Bobcats played four games on the season-opening road trip, and they’ll take a record of 2-2 into this weekend’s 2008 home openers at Bend’s Vince Genna Stadium.
On Saturday, COCC is scheduled to face NCAA Division III Linfield College of McMinnville at 1 p.m., and that game will be followed at approximately 4 p.m. by a game between Linfield and Wenatchee Valley College of Wenatchee, Wash.
On Sunday, the Bobcats will play a doubleheader against Wenatchee Valley, a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. That twin bill is set to start at noon.
Admission is free for all games.
“We’re still trying to feel out who are our starters, who will be our pitchers,” said Tom Eilertson, third-year head coach at COCC.
Eilertson said not much was resolved in Nevada, where the Bobcats were involved in four close contests. After opening with an 8-4 victory over Idaho State last Thursday night, COCC lost 14-11 on Friday against Weber State in eight innings (games were scheduled for seven innings).
Later Friday, the Bobcats won 6-4 over Montana. And on Saturday, UC Santa Cruz took a 7-6 decision from Central Oregon.
“We could have easily gone 4-0, or easily have gone 0-4,” said Eilertson.
Among the standouts for COCC was Nate Thomas, a sophomore from Redmond who was the winning pitcher in the Bobcats’ victory over Montana. Another Central Oregon pitcher of note was freshman Johnathan Kennedy of Brookings, a left-hander who made two relief appearances and was credited with a save in the Idaho State game. Adam Honeycutt, a freshman from Bend, was the winning pitcher against Idaho State.
COCC’s hitting leaders at Mesquite, according to Eilertson, were outfielders Ryan McGraw, a sophomore from Klamath Falls; John Severs, a freshman from Anaheim, Calif.; and Josh Pruden, a freshman from Brookings.
“Overall, I was very pleased,” Eilertson said. “We made very few mental errors, and the physical errors will take care of themselves. Win or lose, we wanted to see some different combinations and see what we could do.”
He noted that the games in Nevada marked the Bobcats’ first time playing outdoors so far this season. There is no baseball facility at COCC, and the team’s early practices were confined to gym workouts.
“A huge liability for us is that we don’t have a field,” said Eilertson. The coach added that most of the team’s practices this season will take place at Big Sky Sports Complex in east Bend and at Skyline Sports Complex in southwest Bend.
For home games, the Bobcats will play at Genna Stadium on a rental basis.
Eilertson said the current Central Oregon roster is at 22 players. He said he and his coaching staff — assistants Chris Wright and Jeff Garrison — are still trying to determine starters at a number of positions.
“At this point, I’d say we’re an extremely deep team with few real standout players,” said Eilertson. “We have a pretty strong two-deep almost everywhere, and we have 10 pitchers.”
COCC is an affiliate of the National Club Baseball Association and is a member of the NCBA’s Northern Pacific Conference West Region, along with teams representing the University of Oregon, Seattle University, Eastern Washington University, Western Washington University, and The Evergreen State College (Olympia, Wash.).
The top two teams from the Northern Pacific Conference West qualify for a regional tournament May 7-11 in La Grande. Eilertson said he believes the Bobcats could earn a postseason berth.
“We were a very good team at the end of last year,” said Eilertson, noting that COCC won six of its last seven games in 2007 to finish with a record of 11-11. “I think this year we’re posturing for playoff position.”
