Two Bend golfers cash in at Futures tournament

MCALLEN, Texas – Two players from Central Oregon made the cut and earned paychecks over the weekend in the $75,000 Jalapeno Duramed Futures Golf Classic.
The 54-hole Futures Tour tournament was staged at Palm View Golf Course.
Bend’s Taya Battistella, 27, shot a 2-over-par 218 (75-73-70) to finish in a six-player tie for 26th place, earning $597.
Kailin Downs, 23 and also of Bend, shot an 8-over 224 (73-74-77) and finished in a five-way tie for 64th place, earning $459.
Emily Bastel of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, claimed the $10,500 top prize, placing first with a 6-under score of 210.
Both Battistella, a graduate of Bend High School, and Downs, a graduate of Mountain View High, are former prep golf champions in Oregon. Both also are in their first year on the Futures Tour.
With their earnings in Texas, Battistella and Downs both moved up the Futures Tour winnings list. Battistella is 52nd, with $2,099 in five tournaments; Downs is 84th, with $1,375 in five events.
The two Bend-based players are both entered in the field for this weekend’s $80,000 El Paso Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas.
The Duramed Futures Tour is a women’s professional golf tour that bills itself as ”The Road to the LPGA.” The Futures Tour has been designated as the official developmental tour of the LPGA.
