SALEM – Briaunna King led three Redmond players in double figures with 16 points as the Panthers won a big Central Valley Conference girls basketball game by defeating Sprague 49-28 Thursday night.
The victory gives Redmond (5-3 CVC, 8-11 overall) a season sweep of the Olympians and keeps the Panthers in third place in the league standings, one-half game ahead of South Salem.
Redmond raced out to an 8-0 lead, but Sprague scored the final nine points of the first quarter for a 9-8 lead after one period.
But it was pretty much all Redmond from that point on as the Panthers outscored the Olympians 18-4 in the second quarter, holding Sprague without a field goal in the period.
”In the second quarter we basically attacked,” said Redmond coach Mike Osborne. ”We had five people score and did some good things offensively and played good defense.”
Several Panther players had strong games on Thursday. Molly Skinner finished with 12 points, six blocks and five rebounds, Katelyn Hanf added 11 points, four steals and three rebounds, Bre Meulink recorded eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks, and Amanda Hammond grabbed six rebounds and had three steals.
”A huge win because we’ve beaten them twice and we played well on the road,” added Osborne, who noted that the Panthers had only 12 turnovers against Sprague’s pressure defense.
Caitlin Brown’s eight points led Sprague (4-5 CVC, 12-8 overall).
Redmond hosts North Salem on Tuesday night.
In other Thursday games:
Kennedy 43
Culver 30
CULVER – The Bulldogs started strong, but faded late in a Tri-River Conference loss to Kennedy. Culver (6-10 TRC, 9-15 overall) led by seven points at the end of the first quarter and still held a one-point advantage at halftime. But it was all Kennedy in the second half as the Bulldogs struggled offensively, managing to score just eight points. Maria Ruiz scored 12 points, while Jordan Roen tallied seven points and six rebounds for Culver, which will play a league playoff game next week.
