Bend grad is fencing for Duke

Nic Testerman of Bend has entered his senior season with the men’s fencing team at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Testerman and the Blue Devils, ranked 10th in the nation, opened their 2006 season on Jan. 22 at the four-team Philadelphia Invitation, where Testerman posted a 9-3 overall record in epee.
Testerman followed up his season-opening performance by posting five wins for Duke’s epee team on Sunday at the Notre Dame Duals.
A 2002 graduate of Bend High School, Testerman is a fourth-year member of the Duke fencing team. The former Lava Bear specializes in epee and compiled a 14-8 record in the event as a junior.

MORRELL MAKING WAVES: Nolan Morrell of Bend is already making a big contribution as a freshman to the men’s swimming and diving team at the University of Tennessee. Morrell, a 2005 graduate of Summit High School, has reached the finals and placed high in several events for the Volunteers, including the 200-yard backstroke, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle, as well as relays. Tennessee is ranked No. 11 nationally.

WILDCAT HOOPSTERS: Three Central Oregon products are playing for the 2005-06 men’s basketball team at Linfield College in McMinnville. Matt McGowan of Redmond is a 6-5 sophomore guard who has played in all 19 games to date, averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds. Jackson Baber of Bend is a 6-8 freshman center who has also played in all 19 games, averaging 3.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Zach Sweeney of Sisters is a 6-4 junior guard who has seen limited action in seven games.

MARCEAU HITS THE WATER: Kristin Marceau of Bend is part of the women’s swimming team at Washington State University in Pullman. The 2005 graduate of Summit High School is a freshman specializing in freestyle and butterfly events. Marceau most recently has been competing as a member of the WSU ”B” and ”C” freestyle, butterfly and medley relay teams.

BEND TRIO PLAYING RUGBY: Three residents of Bend are competing on the Oregon State University men’s rugby club, which placed third at the inaugural Pacific-10 Conference Tournament held Jan 21-22 in Los Angeles. Nathan Rogers, Zach Dodds and Casey Carmen of Bend are all part of the OSU squad that defeated UCLA 22-21 in the third-place match.
