Here is the weekly fishing report for selected areas in and around Central Oregon, provided by fisheries biologists for the Bend office of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The ODFW’s complete report is available at its Web site (www.dfw.state.or.us). Click on ‘Recreation Report.’

CENTRAL ZONE

BIG LAVA LAKE: Anglers are reporting fair to good success. Big Lava Lake provides good opportunity for rainbow trout up to 18 inches. October is normally a good time to fish Big Lava, though the weather can be a little challenging at times.

COLUMBIA RIVER (from Bonneville Reservoir to John Day Dam): Fishing for steelhead and fall chinook near the mouth of the Deschutes River has been fair. Boat anglers have been successful trolling small plugs at about 10 to 15 feet of depth. Retention for sturgeon is closed in Bonneville and The Dalles Reservoirs. Catch and release sturgeon angling may continue for the remainder of 2005.

CRANE PRAIRIE RESERVOIR: Though there are no angler reports from the previous week, this is a good time for anglers to try their luck and skill on Crane Prairie Reservoir. There is good opportunity for rainbow trout, brook trout and largemouth bass.

CRESCENT LAKE: No reports from anglers, though the brown trout and lake trout activity should be picking up.

CULTUS LAKE: No reports. Opportunities available to catch rainbow trout and lake trout for those anglers wishing to fish the lake.

DAVIS LAKE: Reports of some fairly good fly angling for largemouth bass. Rainbow trout fishing has been a little slow. Extremely low water has resulted in limited access. Accessible for small craft i.e. canoes; small pontoon boats and float tubes. Please note that Davis Lake is a fly angling fishery only.

DESCHUTES RIVER (lower): Trout fishing is fair on the lower Deschutes River. Anglers have been most successful using a variety of caddis patterns. Summer steelhead fishing is fair on the lower Deschutes from Maupin to the mouth. Fishing should be improving upstream of Sherars Falls as good numbers of steelhead are passing the falls. Boaters on the Deschutes should be cautious of unusually low water conditions. Chinook fishing has been slow at Sherars Falls. Trap counts at Sherars Falls have been improving so fishing should be picking up.

DESCHUTES RIVER (Lake Billy Chinook to Benham Falls): No recent reports from anglers on this stretch of water.

DESCHUTES RIVER (Benham Falls upstream to Wickiup Reservoir): Reports of fair to good activity for rainbow trout and brown trout.

DESCHUTES RIVER (Wickiup Reservoir upstream to Crane Prairie Reservoir): Closed to angling to protect spawning kokanee, along with brown trout which are staging prior to spawning.

EAST LAKE: Reports of good success for rainbow trout and brown trout.

ELK LAKE: No reports from the past week.

FALL RIVER: Anglers are reporting good rainbow trout action.

HOOD RIVER: Steelhead fishing on the Hood River is slow, but visibility has improved. Fishing could also improve as a result of recent cooler temperatures and improved visibility.

HOSMER LAKE: No report from the past week, though the angling for Atlantic salmon should be good. Hosmer Lake is a fly angling fishery only.

LITTLE LAVA LAKE: No reports from the previous week though the cooler weather should help the anglers degree of success.

METOLIUS RIVER: Reports of good rainbow trout action.

ODELL LAKE: Even though the older kokanee have begun spawning, anglers are still having some degree of success catching younger fish.

PAULINA LAKE: Reports of good rainbow trout catches along with some fair brown trout action.

SOUTH TWIN LAKE: Reports of some very nice rainbow trout being caught by few anglers fishing the lake.

SUTTLE LAKE: No reports from the past week. Suttle Lake provides good opportunity for kokanee and brown trout though there are no recent reports on angler success at this time.

THREE CREEKS LAKE: Although there are no recent angler reports, the brook trout and rainbow trout opportunity is excellent and the chances of the fishing being good are high.

WICKIUP RESERVOIR: Reports of some fair largemouth bass action and some nice brown trout being caught as well. The Deschutes River Arm, upstream of the ODFW marker, is now closed to angling to protect spawning kokanee, along with brown trout which are staging in the area prior to spawning.
