Skiers hit slopes to open season

Bend High took first place with a combined team time of 6 minutes, 41.9 seconds to finish ahead of Summit and win the season-opening Central Oregon High School Ski League boys giant slalom on Saturday at Mount Bachelor.
Sisters posted a combined team time of 7:01.56 to finish ahead of Bend (7:04.62) for the top spot in the girls division.
The Lava Bear boys were led by Michael Timm, who snagged first in Run A and third in Run B to finish at the top of pack with a combined time of 2:11.07. Bend High grabbed spots five through eight with Alexander Westphal finishing fifth (2:14.69), Reed Johnson sixth (2:16.85), Cody Doolan seventh (2:17.94) and Kevin Drudgel eighth (2:19.74). John Stewart finished in the 10th spot in 2:20.42 for the Lava Bears.
”The boys performed well as a team,” said Bend High coach Greg Timm.
Joe Prodehl (2:11.45) finished in second overall to lead Summit. Storm teammates Max Gromber (2:11.86) and Chad Thorton (2:11.87) finished third and fourth, respectively, to give Summit three out of the top five places.
Kevin Sykora was the top finisher for Mountain View (fourth place as a team), placing ninth in 2:19.47. Chris Shisler (2:23.62, 14th place) was the top finisher for third-place Redmond, and Sisters rounded out the boys division, finishing fifth, with Michael Cristiano (16th overall) leading the Outlaws.
Liz Dale of Sisters had the best overall two runs for a combined time of 2:17.47 to take the No. 1 spot in the girls division. Dale was joined by Whitey Engstrom (third, 2:18.76) and Annie Hancock (ninth, 2:25.33) for a team time of 7:01.56.
Bend High was led by Erika Skatvold, who held the second overall spot with a time of 2:18.39 and was followed by Karli Coggin (fifth, 2:21.77). Molly Ziegler (eighth, 2:24.46) and Courtney Schwartz (10th, 2:26.25) rounded out the top-10 finishers for Bend.
”It took a level of mental toughness today,” said Timm. ”There was a lot of new snow and they had to battle the elements.”
