How to help Katrina’s victims

For those wishing to donate money to aid hurricane victims, the following organizations are accepting donations.

* The American Red Cross: 800-HELP-NOW, www.redcross.org, or visit the local Red Cross headquarters on Twin Knolls Drive in Bend to donate. Checks should be made to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

* Northwest Medical Teams: www.nwmedicalteams.org. People may also call 800-959-4325 to donate or send checks to Northwest Medical Teams, P.O. Box 10, Portland, OR 97207.

* Wells Fargo Bank has opened three donations accounts on behalf of the Portland-based Mercy Corps relief agency, the American Red Cross and the United Way for any members of the public who want to help.

Gifts to the ”Mercy Corps Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund” account, the ”American Red Cross – Katrina Relief” account or the ”United Way Katrina Relief Fund” account may be made at any Wells Fargo banking store in Oregon, Washington and 21 other states.

* Mercy Corps is also accepting donations online at www. mercycorps.org.

* Oregon State Police troopers are loading four semi-trailers with supplies, drinking water and other items to help their fellow troopers in Mississippi and Louisiana, according to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Jeff Leighty. Central Oregonians may help cover the cost of fuel to transport the donated items.

Monetary donations may be made through the Oregon State Police Officers’ Association’s Hurricane Fund at 800-503-BEAR (2327).
