James Harvey DeWitt of Redmond died Saturday of natural causes. He was 82.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the VFW Hall in Redmond. A potluck will follow.
Mr. DeWitt was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Pawhuska, Okla., to Leonard and Beulah (Clants) DeWitt. He was raised and educated in Dallas, Ore. He joined the National Guard at age 16, and later served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He married Phyllis DeWitt in 1982 in Vancouver, Wash.
Mr. DeWitt worked as a liaison between the Port of Portland and the U.S. Navy for the repair of Naval vessels. He later worked as a welding supervisor for Wagner Mining in Portland. He retired in 1972. He was a member of the Redmond VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill of Portland and Steve of Tualatin; a stepson, Rich Herdt of Seattle; three daughters, Linda Hadley of Oregon City, Lisa Nemec of Puyallup, Wash., and Kelly Malone of Aloha; a stepdaughter, Laura Herdt of Mt. Vernon; a brother, Leonard of Medford; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son.
