The two people killed Monday in a car accident on Highway 20 near the summit of Santiam Pass were identified as Springfield residents, according to a news release from the Oregon State Police.

Johnny Lee Thompson Jr., 36, and Shelley R. Howe, 37, were killed when Thompson lost control of his vehicle and slid into an oncoming pickup, the release reported. The roadway east of the summit, where the accident occurred, was covered in water and slush at the time.

Thompson apparently was not using a seat belt, but Howe was, the release reported. The two, who lived together, were returning to Springfield after visiting Bend.

The driver of the pickup, Joel A. Hall, 28, and his wife, Traci Lee Hall, 31, both of Molalla, were unhurt, according to the release. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

One lane of Highway 20 was closed for about 90 minutes while troopers and emergency workers cleared the scene of the accident. The Oregon State Police are continuing to investigate, the release reported.
