Fern E. Bass

Aug. 9, 1928 – June 23, 2003

Fern E. Bass of Prineville died Monday of colon cancer. She was 74.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 30 at the First Baptist Church in Prineville followed by a graveside service at Juniper Haven Cemetery.

Mrs. Bass was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Brentwood, Ark., to Jesse and Helen (Bender) Pool. She graduated from Shedd High School in 1946. She married Lyle Robb in 1946 in Camas, Wash., and later married Robert Barrett in 1964 in Carson City, Nev. She then married Charles Bass in May of 1997 in Reno, Nev.

She worked as a school bus driver in the Central Linn area and in Prineville. She was also a representative for Beeline Fashions and Avon Products.

Mrs. Bass was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1972. She was also a member of the Awana group at church.

She enjoyed needlework, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of Prineville; four sons, Roger Robb of Albany, Alva Robb of Tangent, Kenneth Robb of Albany and Wade Barrett of Prineville; a stepson, Henry Hank’ of Redmond; a daughter, Lyla Heyman of Albany; two stepdaughters, Pamela and Ruby, both of Redmond; two brothers, Garner Pool of Albany and Forest Pool of Portland; five sisters, Beryl Lintz of Kalispell, Mont., Bettie Hamm of Keizer, Patricia Alvis of Ellijay, Ga., Joleen Irish of Dublin, Calif., and Marjorie Davis of Bend; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, a son, her parents, a brother and a grandson.

James R. Weaver

May 9, 1946 – June 21, 2003

James R. Weaver of La Pine died Saturday of natural causes. He was 57.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at La Pine Community Cemetery.

Mr. Weaver was born May 9, 1946, in Colorado City, Texas. He married Sharon Hunter. He worked as a carpenter and concrete worker.

Mr. Weaver was an avid gardener. He also enjoyed animals, his work and his family.

Survivors include his wife of La Pine; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Flynn of Portland; four brothers, Bill of Garland, Texas, Thurston of Glena Park, Texas, Dean of Canton, Texas, and Jesse of Washburn, Tenn.; a sister, Juanita Martel of La Pine; and a grandchild.

Lewie Stahancyk

July 28, 1922 – June 21, 2003

Lewie Stahancyk of Prineville died Saturday of natural causes. He was 80.

No service will be held.

Mr. Stahancyk was born July 28, 1922, in Bankhead, Alberta, Canada, to Joseph and Anna Stahancyk. He moved to Central Oregon in 1924 and attended Crook County High Schools. He married Melva Lamp on June 10, 1944, in Prineville.

After high school, he purchased a ranch and spent his life working as a rancher.

Mr. Stahancyk was a founding member of the Prineville Community Church where he served as an usher and board member.

Survivors include his wife of Prineville; a son, Jack of Palmer, Alaska; two daughters, Rita Holland of West Linn and Linda Ackler of Bend; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewie Stahancyk Memorial Fund (to support land and timber conservation in Oregon), c/o Community First Bank in Prineville.

Lloyd W. Hanson

Feb. 27, 1924 – June 22, 2003

Lloyd W. Hanson of Bend died Sunday. He was 79.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Bend.

Mr. Hanson was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Erskine, Minn., to Thomas and Sina Hanson. He married Beatrice on Oct. 2, 1952, in Palmer, Alaska.

Mr. Hanson served in the Navy for two years during World War II. After his discharge he moved to Alaska and then to Lebanon.

He worked as a lineman for Pacific Power and Light for 20 years. He moved to Bend in 1981.

Mr. Hanson was a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul and Meals on Wheels.

He enjoyed woodworking and camping.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; four sons, Lawrence and Lyle, both of Palmer, Alaska, Dean of Portland and Peter of Bend; two daughters, Holly of Gardner, Wyo., and Linda Bedmer of Juneau, Alaska; two brothers, Sydney of Erskine, Minn., and Clinton of Fargo, Minn.; a sister, Clarice of Sisseton, S.D.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Robert Henry Cooks

Aug. 21, 1916 – June 23, 2003

Robert Henry Cooks of Bend died Monday of natural causes. He was 86.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Deschutes Memorial Mausoleum Chapel.

Mr. Cooks was born Aug. 21, 1916, in San Mateo, Calif., to Oswald and Elizabeth (Geary) Cooks. He married Margaret Pfaender on May 18, 1947, in McMinnville.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Honolulu and Midway.

Mr. Cooks worked as a printer for the San Mateo Times for 50 years. He retired in 1982.

He enjoyed traveling and his family.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, Thomas of Albany; a daughter, Mary Cotton of Sequim, Wash.; a brother, Walter of Auburn, Calif.; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Alden Dunne White

May 19, 1917 – June 21, 2003

Alden Dunne White of Redmond died Saturday. He was 86.

No service will be held.

Mr. White was born May 19, 1917, in San Francisco to Alden and Theresa (Dunne) White. He married Muriel.

He attended medical school in St. Frances, Calif. He worked as a surgeon in the Bay area.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond.

Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Freedman

May 8, 1941 – June 23, 2003

Joe Freedman of Bend died Monday. He was 62.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend.

Mr. Freedman was born May 8, 1941, in Portland to Sam and Thelma Freedman. He attended Oregon State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He married Maryanne on June 25, 1977, in Bend.

He worked as a real estate broker where he specialized in ranch properties. He was a lifetime resident of Central Oregon.

Mr. Freedman enjoyed the land, river and his home in Central Oregon. His hobbies included skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and traveling. He also enjoyed ranching and his association with the ranchers he worked with.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, Jason Pinckney; and a brother, Tom Freedman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Charles Medical Center Foundation, Heart Institute of the Cascades and the Central Oregon Community College Foundation.
