Richard Craig Duke
June 17, 1950 – June 28, 2003
Richard Craig Duke of Madras died June 28 of natural causes. He was 53.
A memorial service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the home of Bob and Barbara Duke, 479 SW Madison St., Madras.
Mr. Duke was born June 17, 1950, in Delta, Colo., to Robert and Barbara Duke. He graduated from Madras High School in 1969 and was involved in many high school sports there. He married Kandice McLean on May 12, 2001, in Madras.
He worked as a fabricator for Brightwood Corp. He had previously worked as a saw filer and sheet metal worker.
Mr. Duke had been an active member of the Mount Bachelor Ski Patrol, which he served as vice president.
He enjoyed hunting and dogs.
Survivors include his wife of Madras; two daughters, Brookley of Eugene and Chelsea of San Diego; his parents of Madras; and a brother, Gary of Portland.

Clifford Cliff’ R. Rich
Jan. 27, 1918 – July 5, 2003
Clifford ”Cliff” R. Rich of Bend died Saturday of natural causes. He was 85.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Rich was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Boring to Otis and Esther (Yerkes) Rich. He graduated from Sandy Union High School and then graduated from Oregon Normal School for Education. He earned a master’s in education from Linfield College. He married Lorena Burchfield on May 14, 1940, in Gresham.
He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Mr. Rich moved to Bend in 1942. He began teaching at Kenwood School in 1946 and then taught at Bend High School until his retirement in 1978.
He was a member of the Bend Elks Lodge 1371. He served as State Elks Chairman for Training and was inducted into the State Elks Hall of Fame in 2003.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping and playing pinochle.
Survivors include his two sons, Jerry of Medford and Jim of Redmond; a daughter, Janet Marsh of Oregon City; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, parents and a brother.

Andrea Lea Michael
Jan. 24, 1942 – July 4, 2003
Andrea Lea Michael of La Pine died July 4 of natural causes. She was 61.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at La Pine Christian Church.
Mrs. Michael was born Jan. 24, 1942, in Dexter to Robert and Katie (Garten) Mauney. She married Larry Michael on Dec. 12, 1959, in Dexter.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Michael was affiliated with the La Pine Christian Center and was a member of the Gideons.
Her hobbies included quilting and cooking. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Alaska.
Survivors include her husband of La Pine; three sons, Lawrence of Pleasant Hill, Lee of Winston and Brandon of La Pine; three daughters, Barbara Hostick of White City, Bonna Greene of Lacy, Wash., and Denise Quadros of La Pine; two sisters, Vivian of Oregon and Nadine of La Pine; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

Judy N. (Bruner) Harris
Feb. 25, 1921 – July 4, 2003
Judy N. (Bruner) Harris of Salem died July 4. She was 82.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem Evangelical Church, 455 Locus St. NE, Salem.
Mrs. Harris was born Feb. 25, 1921. She married Jack Harris.
She lived in Lakeview for 20 years, where she owned the Southside Market. She then moved to Bend and worked as a realtor from 1970 to 1985. She lived in Waldport and Albany before moving to Salem four years ago.
Mrs. Harris was a member of the Eastern Star in Lakeview.
Survivors include her son Gary Bruner of Bend; a daughter, Jan Davis of Keizer; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to programs for heart and lung research.

John Currin Veatch II
Aug. 27, 1920 – July 7, 2003
John Currin Veatch II of Bend died Monday. He was 82.
No service will be held, per his request.
Mr. Veatch was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Portland to John and Lillian Veatch. He attended Alameda Grade School and Lincoln High School in Portland. He earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Washington and the University of Oregon. He also earned a law degree from the University of Oregon.
Mr. Veatch served in the Army during World War II and was stationed on the island of Tinian in the South Pacific. He married Betsy Feasley on Dec. 11, 1943.
He practiced law in Portland for 25 years. He was also a partner at Parker Northwest Paving Co.
Mr. Veatch served as a board member for Nationwide Insurance Co., West Coast Life Insurance Co., Colonial Insurance Co., Scottsdale Insurance Co. and Gulf Atlantic Insurance Co. He was also the Oregon state chairman of the YMCA Youth and Government program for 15 years.
He was affiliated with the Toastmasters club and was an original member and treasurer of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, fly fishing and being with his family. He spent summers in Central Oregon most of his life before retiring to Sisters and Bend.
Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, Robert of Crooked River Ranch; two daughters, Julie Brown of Powell Butte and Marilyn Dey of Beaverton; a sister, Lilyann Windus; and eight grandchildren.
