William Charles Harting
Nov. 26, 1908 – July 25, 2003
William Charles Harting of Bend died July 25 of natural causes. He was 94.
No service will be held.
Mr. Harting was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Sumner, Ill., to Homer and Sarrah (Turner) Harting.
He moved west after high school and joined the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch and Wild West Show in Livingston, Mont., where he worked in several films with Buck Jones. He then joined the Undercover Prohibition Department of Iowa and worked there until the end of Prohibition, joining the Treasury Department thereafter. Mr. Harting left to attend the Mackey School of Mines in Reno, Nev., followed by service in the Army during World War II.
After World War II, Mr. Harting moved to Alaska and did contract construction work for the Army. He retired in 1972 and moved to Bend. He married Nadine in 1982.
He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge of Reno, Nev.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He wrote eleven novels.
Survivors include his wife of Bend; and stepson, Marty Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, a son and a daughter.

Glenn Tolliver Stewart
Dec. 27, 1919 – July 275, 2003
Glenn Tolliver Stewart of Bend died Sunday of natural causes. He was 83.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 at First Missionary Baptist Church, 21129 Reed Market Road, Bend. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at Pilot Butte Cemetery.
Mr. Stewart was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Kirkwood, Ill., to Thomas and Lena (Slagle) Stewart. He married Emma Eitenmuller on Mar. 4, 1994, in Pekin, Ill.
He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Stewart worked for Cascade Natural Gas for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Emma; two sons, Tom of Bend and Robert of Port Orchard, Wash., and a daughter, Beverly, of Bend.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Margaret Maggie’ Evelin Underwood
September 1923 – July 23, 2003
Margaret ”Maggie” Evelin Underwood of Brooklyn, N.Y., died July 23 of a stroke. She was 79.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 63175 18th St., Bend.
Mrs. Underwood was born in September of 1923 in Budapest, Hungary, to William and Alvina Mallows. She married Donald Underwood in Nov., 1994, in Washington.
Survivors include her husband of Brooklyn; three sons, Don of Bend, Chris of Kingston, Wash., and Bill of Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Connie Olson of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Charlotte Dougherty of Bend and Jodie Bailey of Kailua-Kona; a brother, Bill Mallows of Shelton, Wash.; a sister, Helen Beihl of Shelton; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Paul Philip Halpin
July 25, 1937 – July 25, 2003
Paul Philip Halpin of Bend died July 25 of natural causes. He was 66.
No service will be held.
Mr. Halpin was born July 25, 1937, in Springfield, Ill., to Michael and Dora (Matthes) Halpin. He grew up in Glendale, Calif., and graduated from Glendale High School. He earned a law degree from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law.
He was hired by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 1964 and worked as a prosecutor for 39 years. He won convictions in the Onion Field and Nightstalker murder cases in Los Angeles. He retired in 2001 and moved to Bend.
Mr. Halpin was a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and the Elks Lodge.
He enjoyed horseback riding, sailing and playing the trombone. Mr. Halpin also enjoyed reading historic literature.
Survivors include his two daughters, Cydney of New York City and Debie Loftus of Green Valley Lake, Calif.; three sisters; and two grandchildren.
