CORVALLIS – Steven Jackson helped Oregon State get a payback for its embarrassing loss to Fresno State last year, running for 227 yards and two touchdowns to led the Beavers to a 59-19 blowout victory Saturday night.

Derek Anderson passed for 214 yards and three touchdowns for the Beaver (4-0), who were picked by Sports Illustrated to win the national title last season, only to comply with the magazine’s infamous ”cover-page jinx” by being humiliated by the Bulldogs 44-24 in Fresno.

That was the start of a long and difficult season for OSU, which finished with a 5-6 record.

Without quarterback David Carr, the No. 1 NFL draft pick, Fresno State (1-3) is much weaker this season, however, and on Saturday most of the Bulldogs’ scoring was done by Asen Asparuhov, who kicked four field goals.

Early in the game, Oregon State linebacker Richard Seigler intercepted Jeff Grady’s pass meant for Marque Davis and ran it back 65 yards to the end zone for the first touchdown of his career.

Seigler ran the final 10 yards with his arm raised as the sellout crowd of 36,457 at Reser Stadium went wild.

The Bulldogs answered on the next series. After a 22-yard carry by Rodney Davis, Asparuhov kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Anderson hit Kenny Farley with a 48-yard touchdown pass a little more than a minute later to put the Beavers up 14-3. Then Ryan Cesca added a 51-yard field goal.

The Bulldogs closed the gap with field goals of 41, 52 and 43 yards by Asparuhov. His 52-yarder early in the second quarter was his career best.

But Anderson helped the Beavers pull away with a 32-yard TD pass to Shawn Kintner, and a 12-yard TD pass to James Newson to make it 31-12 at halftime.

While Fresno State ran out of gas, the Beavers were just getting going.

Four third-quarter touchdowns sealed the game for the Beavers. Jackson ran 2 and 75 yards for scores, and Dwight Wright added an 11-yard TD run. Defensive end Noah Happe intercepted a pass by Fresno State backup Paul Pinegar and ran it back 52 yards for another score.

The Beavers made three interceptions, giving them an NCAA-best of 11 for the season.

Grady, who left the game at the half with what appeared to be a rib injury, completed 15 of 36 passes for 191 yards. He had missed Fresno State’s previous two games after bruising his hip in the Bulldogs’ season-opening loss to Wisconsin.

And the Bulldogs were without highly touted receiver Bernard Berrian, who sprained his knee against Wisconsin and hasn’t played since.

Pinegar, who was 10 of 17 for 116 yards, threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Stephen Spach in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were coming off a bye. Going into Saturday’s game they were 5-0 under coach Pat Hill after a week off.

Oregon State now begins Pac-10 Conference play and will travel to Los Angeles to play USC next Saturday, Fresno State of the Western Athletic Conference has another non-league game, at Rice.
