CODE team makes meth bust near school

Three people were arrested on drug charges Thursday after police seized a half-pound of methamphetamine, weapons and thousands of dollars of suspected stolen property from a home near Amity Creek Elementary School.

The Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team (CODE) served the warrant at 615 NW Georgia Ave. at 7:33 a.m., according to a CODE news release.

Police arrested the occupants of the home, Robert Loren McKheen, 47, and Corrie Lynn Chappel, 24 and charged them with multiple drug offenses and a single count each of child neglect.

Chappel’s two minor children were at the residence at the time of the search and were later placed with a relative.

More than 100 items were seized from the residence, including the meth, scales, packaging materials, suspected drug records, a small amount of marijuana and three handguns. Because the home was within the 1,000 ”Drug Free Zone,” around schools, McKheen and Chappel face stiffer penalties on the drug charges.

Thousands of dollars of suspected stolen property were also taken. Bend Police Lt. Bob Carpenter said CODE officials believe the seized items, some of which had never been taken out of their packaging, were traded for methamphetamine.

Bend police detectives were called to process the evidence found throughout the house. Pagers, tools, cell phones, speakers, computers, car stereos, televisions and other items were taken from the home.

Bend police are now in the process of trying to find out if the property was stolen, and, if so, to whom it belongs.

McKheen was still in the Deschutes County Jail Friday night on $50,000 bail.

Chappel was conditionally released from the jail on Friday.

The CODE team is a multi-jurisdictional narcotics task force composed of detectives from all Central Oregon law enforcement agencies.
