John Clarence Eberhard of Redmond died in a car accident Thursday. He was 25.

A funeral service followed by a burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Assembly of God Church in Redmond.

Mr. Eberhard was born Aug. 3, 1975, in Redmond, to Richard Eberhard and Barbara Arnett. He graduated from Redmond High School in 1993.

He married Patty Ippolito on Oct. 23, 1999, in Bend.

Mr. Eberhard was self-employed at Eberhards Dairy Products.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working on cars, and exploring Central Oregon.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond; one son, John of Redmond; father, Richard of Redmond; mother, Barbara Arnett of Redmond; grandmother, Pat McAndie of Redmond; one brother, Spencer of Redmond; and three sisters, Elisa Carlson, Natalie and Rachel, all of Redmond.

Arthur Harold Vehlen

Arthur Harold Vehlen of Bend died Sunday of natural causes. He was 87.

A private memorial service will be held for him.

Mr. Vehlen was born Aug. 8, 1913, in Chicago, to Arthur and Martha.

He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Vehlen worked as a tile setter in construction. He moved to Bend after retiring.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and wood carving.

Mr. Vehlen was preceded in death by his parents.

Grace L. (Cooley) Werner

Grace L. (Cooley) Werner of Gresham died Monday. She was 89.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Gresham.

Mrs. Werner was born April 28, 1912, in Newport, Wash., to Wallace and Jessie Cooley. Her family moved to Bend in 1916. She graduated Yoncalla High School in 1930 as the class Salutatorian.

She married Casper Werner on Oct. 14, 1933, in Bend.

Mrs. Werner was a farmer and ran a flower stand with her husband selling gladiolas.

They moved to Boring in 1990.

Mrs. Werner enjoyed nature, writing poetry, crocheting and reading.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Barbara Youngberg of Boring and Marjorie Snyder of San Bernadino, Calif.; one sister, Hazel Green of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Vivian Frances (Rice) Pettit

Vivian Frances (Rice) Pettit of Terrebonne died Sunday of natural causes. She was 87.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday July 21 at Smith Rock Community Church in Terrebonne.

Mrs. Pettit was born Dec. 20, 1913, in Marceline, Mo., to James and Ave (Blue) Rice. She married Walter Pettit.

She moved to Oregon in 1939 and had lived in Terrebonne since 1976.

Mrs. Pettit was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Terrebonne Ladies Pioneer Club and was affiliated with the Smith Rock Community Church.

Mrs. Pettit enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Survivors include her son, Gary of Aumsville; three daughters, Charity Philippi of Redmond, Sharron Church of Salem and Betty Cash of Lincoln City; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother and a sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County.

Laurence T. Newby

Sept. 3, 1915 July 10, 2001

Laurence T. Newby of La Pine died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 85.

A private scattering of the ashes will be held.

Mr. Newby was born Sept. 3, 1915, in White Salmon, Wash.

He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic in the logging industry and retired in 1989. He and his family moved to La Pine in 1990.

Mr. Newby enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors include his special friend, Mary ”Bobbie” Fuqua of La Pine; one son, David; two daughters, Lois and Laura; and one sister, Evelyn Brask.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Neil Frederick

June 26, 1966 July 6, 2001

Neil Frederick of Albany died Friday. He was 35.

A private graveside service will be held at Tumalo Pioneer Cemetery.

Mr. Frederick was born June 26, 1966, in Hoop, Calif. He was raised in Lexington and graduated from college in Laramie, Wyo.

He was a truck driver.

Mr. Frederick married Veronica in 1990 in Halsey.

Survivors include his wife of Albany; one daughter, Amber of Bend; his parents, Neil and Vera of Charleston and Thelma and Ervin Epping of Bend; four sisters, Lorene Papineau of Lexington, Neilla Estrada of Bend, Cindy of Bend and Diana Slaughter of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and two brothers, Duane Epping of Hermiston and Tom Epping of Albany.

Mandi Marie (George) Gregg

Sept. 25, 1976 July 12, 2001

Mandi Marie (George) Gregg died Thursday morning as a result of injuries sustained in a single motor vehicle accident in Terrebonne. She was 24.

Friends may call for visitation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Redmond Memorial Chapel in Redmond. A Celebration of Mandi’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Redmond Memorial Chapel. Pastor Phillip Newton will officiate. A graveside service and interment will follow at Redmond Memorial Cemetery.

Ms. Gregg was born Sept. 25, 1976, in Coquille to Gerald and Caroline (Newton) George. She grew up and attended school there. When she was 12-years-old she won the Ms. Coos County Beauty Pageant. In 1989, the family moved to Redmond.

She worked as a hostess for Sully’s Italian Restaurant in Bend for one year.

Ms. Gregg attended Redmond High School and the Assembly of God Church in Redmond.

Survivors include her fiance, Migel Gonzales of Redmond; son, Sage Thomas Gerald Green of Redmond; parents, Jerry and Caroline George of Terrebonne; grandmother, Dorothy Hurd of Redmond; brothers, Stacy George of Salem, Mark George of Lincoln City and Ronald Mullins of Miami, Okla.; sisters, Sherri George of Salem, Karen George of Keizer, Laura Ferguson of Redmond and Samantha Lyman-Freeman of Oregon City.

Betty Jo Hawks

Betty Jo Hawks of Eugene died Monday of natural causes. She was 71.

A graveside service followed by a burial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Hawks was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Colorado.

She moved to Bend and had lived all over Oregon.

Mrs. Hawks worked as the cook for the Deschutes County Sheriffs for six years. The rest of her life, she was a homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbra Olson of Rockport, Texas; one brother, Bud Wasson of Deadwood; and three grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.
