Fred Meyer to add gas station

Fred Meyer plans to build a seven-pump gas station on a recently purchased piece of land adjacent to its Redmond store, at the intersection of Southwest Seventh Street and Canal Boulevard.

Officials also say they plan to add three more pumps at the Bend location this fall.

The Redmond fuel station would be built across Southwest Seventh Street from the Fred Meyer store, permit documents filed with the city of Redmond show.

Contractors working for Fred Meyer are set to start building the stations in April, opening them up for customer use in June, said Jim Coombes, senior entitlements manager with Fred Meyer’s real estate department.

Details of the plan include installing seven gasoline pumps, with a gas nozzle on both sides of each pump, making a total of 14 fuel dispensaries. Additional plans call for a 5,700-square-foot canopy complete with an attendant’s cashier and kiosk.

Bend’s Fred Meyer typically sees long lines at its fuel service center. Fred Meyer stations often charge a lower price per gallon than other locally operated stations.

On Tuesday, the Bend Fred Meyer was charging $3.90 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, while the Bend area averaged $4.02, according to AAA Oregon/Idaho data. Customers with Fred Meyer rewards cards also can receive a 3-cent-per-gallon discount.

The cost of the Redmond project is estimated at $1.1 million. The Redmond Community Development Department issued Fred Meyer a building permit March 14.

The plans also include expanding access and installing turn signals on two spans of roadway — on Southwest Seventh Street right next to the planned station, and on Juniper Avenue on the west side of Fred Meyer — to handle an expected traffic increase as a result of the station being built, Coombes said.

A vacant commercial building currently sits on the planned gas station site. That building was owned by Keith Rinne, who ran his business, Renew Fitness, and leased two other offices at the site.

Rinne said he and Fred Meyer finalized a deal in January to sell his property. He’s since moved his business to a bigger building, several blocks west on Veterans Way. The other businesses, including Juniper Satellite, have also left.

“We had a long period of negotiation that went on before we both came to a deal that was reasonable for both of us,” Rinne said.

Coombes said the plans for a gas station in Redmond are part of the company’s larger effort to build gas stations at most of its retail locations.

Fred Meyer operates in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.

“Every place we have a Fred Meyer, we’d like to have a fuel center,” Coombes said, adding that Redmond store officials had fielded several requests from customers for the company to build a fuel station there.

Coombes also said the company plans to add three more pumps to the Bend Fred Meyer, on Southeast Third Street. The company is preparing to file an application to build the new pumps in Bend this summer, with construction possibly coming in September.

All told, the number of fuel stations throughout the state has held virtually flat over the past four years, Oregon Department of Energy figures show.

At the start of 2007, there were 1,669 gas stations statewide. By the start of 2011, there were 1,673, for a net gain of just four stations.

The country has seen two major surges in fuel prices between 2007 and 2012. The first, in spring 2008, pushed gas prices above $4 per gallon. They’re on a similar rise now, having reached $3.87 a gallon nationwide as of Monday, according to statistics from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
