Most state offices will be closed Friday in an attempt to save money.
The unpaid furlough day, expected to save $2 million, is the first of 10 that many state workers will take in the upcoming two-year budget cycle.
A state website lists all the agencies that are closed.
“We look forward to restoration of a full work schedule for all state agencies when the economy improves,” the site states.
The next furlough Friday is May 25. Before the year is out, state workers will be required to take furloughs on Aug. 17, Oct. 18 and Nov. 23.
The Division of Driver and Motor Vehicles says the days before and after furloughs can be particularly busy. The department encourages people to accomplish as much as they can online.
State courts will be closed, but the Oregon University System will not be affected.
