Across the United States, there are 66 human cases of H5N1 bird flu, including one person in Oregon. Many of the infected people are farmworkers working with dairy cows.
The fear is that it may transform and more easily spread to more people. It’s already the largest animal disease outbreak.
The risk to people is currently low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there has been no known transfer of the disease from person to person. The probable cause of some people getting it is contact with dairy cattle or poultry.
For you, what does this mean?
The CDC says stay away from wild birds and dead birds. Don’t eat or drink raw milk. If you do have contact with birds or drink raw milk and get sick, call your doctor.
Take sensible precautions.
