Beat back winter blues with sunny strains of The Elovaters

It’s February in Central Oregon, where the temperature is 33 degrees as I write this, the sun currently sets before 6 p.m., and there’s an old crusty layer of snow and ice on the ground. The holidays are in the rearview mirror, and we can’t reliably count on warm weather for months.

We are in the dog days of winter.

Which is the perfect time for a visit from The Elovaters, a good, fast-rising reggae-rock band from Boston. Musically, these cats sound like local faves such as Stick Figure, Indubious, Rebelution, The Expendables, Pepper, Iration and so on. Vibes-wise, they’re a warm beam of sunshine rolling through the region at an otherwise dark time.

“This is some warm weather reggae,” wrote Rootfire.net, a grassroots network of artists and supporters, “out of one of the coldest places in the country.”

The Elovaters have done some interesting things over the years: Their song “People Go” was played during the TV show “Hawaii Five-0.” They released a dub version of their sophomore album “Defy Gravity.” They’ve opened for Ziggy Marley and Slightly Stoopid, among others. And they were named Best Reggae/Ska Artist at the 2022 Boston Music Awards.

Oh, and their most recent album is called “Endless Summer.” On Thursday, they’ll brighten up our endless winter with a show at Midtown Ballroom.

The Elovaters, with Surfer Girl and Veni Sun: 7 p.m. Thursday, $30, Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, midtownballroom.com.
