The city of Bend in partnership with Art in Public Places is accepting applications from artists for a new public art installation. The project is scheduled for completion between 2024 and 2025 and includes a budget of $185,000.

The art will be showcased at the new public works campus currently under construction in Bend. This new campus in Juniper Ridge in northeast Bend will be home to Bend’s utilities, transportation mobility, fleet maintenance, facilities, and engineering, infrastructure and planning departments.

The art commission involves creating large-scale artwork on three key walls within the public lobbies and outdoor terrace of the campus  headquarters. This artwork should be a cohesive concept that extends across all three walls.

The new public works campus, spanning nearly 40 acres, will include “offices, meeting spaces, storage facilities, specialized workshop areas, and the city’s water lab.” City officials hope that housing these departments in one location will enhance efficiency and collaboration among city employees.

The deadline for applications for the public art installation is March 4, and finalists can expect to be notified later that same month.

The artwork should recognize Indigenous history, depict the natural environment of Central Oregon and have a connection to the work carried out by the public works department.

Applicants for the art commission should be residents of one of the following states: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico or Texas.

For those interested in more information, details for the commission can be found at the Art in Public Places call to artists.
