- Protesters calling for a cease fire in Gaza shut down southbound traffic on U.S. Highway 880 in Oakland, California, on Monday. It was among demonstrations across the nation, including in Eugene, where protesters blocked Interstate 5, leading to more than 50 arrests.
A group of demonstrators waving Palestinian flags blocked travel lanes Monday morning on Interstate 5 in Eugene, stopping all southbound traffic for 45 minutes.
The demonstration began around 10 a.m. near the Barlow Bridge, the Oregon State Police said in a press release. State troopers arrested 52 people on allegations of disorderly conduct, state police said, but they did not release the names of the people in custody. Two people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and second-degree theft. All were taken to the Lane County Jail, and six vehicles were towed from the scene.
At least one of the protesters was found with a gun, OSP said.
About 125 people from law enforcement and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded.
Monday’s protest came on the day of a planned “coordinated economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to a website from advocates of the action. Demonstrators blocked freeways and bridges and disrupted travel at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, according to the Associated Press.
All lanes were open by midafternoon.
“Oregon State Police supports an individual’s right to lawfully protest and express concerns over world events,” an unnamed spokesperson for the agency wrote in the press release. “However, today’s actions put Oregon’s motorists in danger as well as the protestors who blocked the roadway.”
