Punk and metal shows surge in Bend, starting with Facet

After a relatively quiet winter, Bend’s underground punk and metal scene has roared to life with the announcement of a flurry of shows over the next several weeks. There’s a little something for everyone here … or at least everyone who likes their music really fast and really loud. Here’s a roundup:
NOISE ROCK
There are rock bands and then there are rock bands that feel more like a battering ram smashing through a big metal door or a locomotive blasting its own tunnel through a mountain or tumbling down a bobsled course filled to the brim with scrap metal and serrated knives.
The keys to this sound are power, relentless pace, dissonant guitars and just enough melody here and there to keep things palatable. We’re talking about bands like The Jesus Lizard, Pissed Jeans and Metz, where you feel like you’re not just listening, but hanging on for dear life.
Facet is like that. The Oakland band formed in 2019 and released a debut full-length last year that fits comfortably into the aforementioned lineage. Which is just another way of saying: They rip!
Facet, with The Kronk Men, Dead Nettle and Hello Traitor: 8 p.m. Monday, $10 in advance, $15 day of show, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
HARDCORE
There’s no shortage of punk bands in Portland, of course, and one of the most promising to come along in some time is Masque, a four-piece with its foot forever on the gas pedal and a vocalist, Tekiah, who sounds like they were born to scream punk songs. Their 2023 demo, which you can find on Bandcamp.com, is a beautiful buzzsaw for the ears.
Masque, with Poolside Leper Society, It’s Chaos and Disposable Scum: 6 p.m. Sunday, April 14, $10, The Capitol, 190 NW Oregon Ave., Bend, thecapitolbend.com.
SLUDGE-PUNK
That rumble you hear? That’s Pillärs, a trio from Cleveland that plays a particularly heavy brand of punk rock. It’s dark and grimy and growling and doomed, not to mention pissed off about the state of the world we live in. Song titles on the band’s fine 2022 album include “War and Plague,” “No Control,” “Something’s Wrong,” “Failed State” and “Will It Ever End?”
Pillärs, with Corvus, Gaspack and Weapon World: 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 15, $10, The Capitol, 190 NW Oregon Ave., Bend, thecapitolbend.com.
DEATH METAL
Look, gore-themed death metal may not be my thing, and it may not be your thing. But it’s out there, and Dripping Decay is one of the better bands doing it right now. The Portland-based quartet’s new “Ripping Remains” EP features a seemingly endless supply of Cookie Monster vocals, technical wizardry, thrash vibes and stomach-churning imagery. Fans of old school death dealers Autopsy, Repulsion and Terrorizer: This one’s for you!
Cartilage, Dripping Decay, Pain Without End, Event Relentless, Veriteras and Gravewitch: 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, doors open 4 p.m., $20 in advance, $25 day of show, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
DEATH-GRIND
If the death metal of Dripping Decay (see above) is just a bit too slow for you, maybe it’s time to step up to Rank & Vile, a Portland band that plays death metal at grindcore speed. What’s grindcore? See below! But first, know that this bill – which also features like-minded Seattle band Nurser – is waiting just around the corner, ready to jump out and startle you, then scorch your scalp and liquefy your skull … in a good way.
Rank & Vile, with Nurser, Dry Scoket, Gaspack and Weapon World: Doors open 6 p.m., Sunday, April 21, $15, The Capitol, 190 NW Oregon Ave., Bend, thecapitolbend.com.
GRINDCORE
Grindcore sound like someone fused together death metal, thrash, crust punk and industrial music, melted it all down into a super-dense brick the size of a D battery and then threw that brick at your face. This bill brings three grindcore-ish bands down from Seattle and pairs ‘em up with local act Weapon World for a pleasant Friday evening in Bend. Let’s hope some of the First Friday crowd accidentally wanders in!
Disease, Exogorth, Tax Evader and Weapon World: 6 p.m. Friday, May 3, $15, The Capitol, 190 NW Oregon Ave., Bend, thecapitolbend.com.
