SOCCER
There were no goals, one assist and no less than four selfie-pursuing field invaders for Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey that secured a spot in the European Championship round of 16. Ronaldo was the center of attention as always at Westfalenstadion but not how he might have expected on Saturday. The five-time world player of the year set up the third goal by Bruno Fernandes with an unselfish pass when he could easily have attempted a shot after being played clean through. Then there was chaos as three fans got on the field and attempted a selfie with Ronaldo during the game and another after the final whistle.
GOLFThe Gearhart Golf Links will host the Les Schwab Tires Amateur Open on Monday. The open is one of two qualifying events for young women amateurs looking to play in the LPGA Portland Classic in August.
Only amateurs with a handicap of 0.5 or less are eligible to play, with the winner receiving an exemption to play in the Portland Classic. Second-, third- and fourth-place finishers will be given a chance to play in a July qualifier at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, where they will have one last chance to qualify for the Portland Classic.
Cameron Young has shot the 13th round of 59 or lower on the PGA Tour. Young made a pair of eagles on par 4s. He finished with a par putt from just inside 10 feet for a 59 in the Travelers Championship.
Young doesn’t even have the course record at the TPC River Highlands. That belongs to Jim Furyk. He shot 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016 for the PGA Tour record. Young had the first sub-60 round since Scottie Scheffler at the TPC Boston in 2020.
BASEBALL
Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Amed Rosario left Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after being hit in the head with a 99 mph fastball from Pirates rookie Jared Jones. Jones’ third pitch to the right-handed Rosario went up and in, striking Rosario’s helmet. Rosario crouched for several moments at scorching PNC Park before being helped off the field by members of the Tampa Bay training staff.
Richie Palacios pinch-ran for Rosario. Palacios then took over at second base at the bottom of the first, while starting second baseman José Caballero slid over to third to take Rosario’s spot on defense.
Rosario was the second Tampa player hit by Jones in the top of the first.
