- Nashville's Thelma and the Sleaze will play Bend's Silver Moon Brewing on Wednesday, June 12.
It’s known for country music, but for the past decade or so, Nashville has become one of the country’s real hotspots for punk, indie rock and other styles of underground music.
One of the bands to come out of that scene is Thelma and the Sleaze, an all-female combo that describes itself both as “Surreal RNR” as well as “The Greatest DIY Queer Southern Rock Band of all time.” And who am I to disagree?
Thelma and the Sleaze revolves around lead vocalist and guitarist Lauren “LG” Gilbert, who is not just a wildly entertaining whirlwind onstage, but also a skilled songwriter whose excellent songs bring together gritty garage rock, Southern soul and swagger, bluesy punk and psychedelic vibes. The band’s 2023 release, “Holey Water,” according to a review on PopMatters.com, was one of that year’s “most surprising, ass-kicking, ass-shaking, fist-pumping, head-banging, satisfying and fun rock albums.”
Hell yeah! Now that sounds like a good way to spend your Hump Day.
Thelma and the Sleaze, with Not Your Ex Lover: 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, $15, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greewood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
