Bend Police continued their investigation Thursday afternoon into a Wednesday evening murder at Legacy Landing, a low-income apartment complex for seniors in Bend. Joshua Lawrence Smith has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing his mother, Janice Marie Smith, 59.

The Bend Police Department has opened applications for community members interested in applying to the Police Chief’s Advisory Council.

There are 13 seats open on the 20-person council. Police Chief Mike Krantz will select members based on their integrity, commitment to residents and a demonstrated ability to communicate with community members.

The council was restarted in 2022 with the hope of building greater trust between residents and the police department. Its main mission is to advise the Bend Police Department about issues from the community’s perspective and act as a communication conduit with community networks.

New members will serve a two-year term and are generally limited to serving one term unless reappointed at the police chief’s discretion. Members are also required to attend the department’s Community Academy and complete at least one ride-along with a police officer. Meetings take place once a month and run 90 minutes.

The application can be accessed online at the city of Bend website. The deadline is 5 p.m., Monday, July 22.
