- A crew builds a fire line Sunday to contain a wildfire near Ukiah.
Firefighters continue to battle a number of wildfires burning in Eastern Oregon, including one complex that has kept a major U.S. highway closed for days.
The Oregon Department of Forestry in a press release reported crews on the Monkey Creek and Snake fires in northern Grant County were working on Monday to build fire lines in difficult terrain along the North Fork John Day River. The team is battling fires now known as the Battle Mountain Complex. The fires started in the late afternoon and evening of July 17 near U.S. Highway 395 in Eastern Oregon.
Firefighters were able to hold and construct a fire line completely around the nearby 3,887-acre North Fork Owens Fire, which stands at 10% containment. Crews were expected to prepare for mop up and patrol the perimeter. Officials shifted crews away from that fire on Monday to the more active Snake and Monkey Creek fires.
On the 7,499-acre Snake Fire, crews held the fire to the west of Highway 395 while focusing on protecting structures and heading off the southeast corner of the fire, near the town of Dale.
Winds out of the north and northwest were pushing the 18,586-acre Monkey Creek Fire south towards Ritter. Firefighters caught a win by keeping the blaze north of the Middle Fork John Day, according to fire crews.
As of Monday afternoon, Highway 395 remained closed between John Day and Pilot Rock in Umatilla County.
With 20 large fires burning more than 520,000 acres, Oregon had the highest number of large fires burning of any state, as of Monday morning, according to the National Interagency Fire Center’s daily report. California had the second most, with 12 large active fires burning on nearly 98,000 acres.
