- Crater Lake was formed about 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the Mount Mazama volcano.
Access to Crater Lake from the north will open on a temporary basis for Labor Day weekend. The north entrance will be open from 7 a.m. Saturday through Monday. The entrance will close again starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
The entrance was initially closed due to wildland firefighters working in the area to build fuel breaks against the Middle Fork Fire.
The closure began on Aug. 13 and was originally scheduled to last one week but was later extended for an indefinite time period. As of Wednesday the Middle Fork Fire was 37% contained and had burned 5,280 acres.
The Middle Fork Fire has also resulted in several temporary trail closures near Crater Lake. This includes the Pacific Crest Trail between Lightning Springs and Rim Trail intersections and Bald Crater Loop. Bert Creek and Boundary Springs trails are also closed.
Travelers headed to Crater Lake can check the Crater Lake website for the latest road and trails updates.
