A man who won $2,000 playing video lottery at a southeast Portland bar Saturday night was followed home by another bar patron and stabbed 15 times in the face, arms and chest before he played dead and the assailant ran off with a portion of the man’s winnings, police said.

Pablo Andres Figueroa, 61, has been charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary and unlawful use of a weapon after police found him hiding in a trash room of the victim’s apartment complex.

According to court papers filed by the prosecution, the victim met Figueroa at Montana’s Bar near SE 117th Avenue and Stark Street. The victim won big on a lottery machine at the bar and then left to walk home around 11:30 p.m. Police said Figueroa followed, was able to slip through the security gate of the victim’s apartment complex before it latched and forced his way into the apartment as the victim stepped inside and attempted to close his door.

Police said Figueroa tackled the victim, pinned him to the floor, struck him and demanded the victim’s winnings. After the man handed over some, Figeuroa allegedly stabbed him 15 times with a pocket knife and then fled as the man feigned death, according to court papers.

Officers responding to the apartment complex spoke to employees of the complex and realized the suspect was still likely on the premises because security footage didn’t show him leaving. Police said they found Figueroa in a trash room with $624 and bloodied pants. They used pepper-spray to take him into custody. A pocket knife was found in the kitty litter of the victim’s apartment.

Figueroa remains in Multnomah County jail with no option of bailing out until a judge further reviews the allegations against him at a hearing next week. He has not yet entered a plea to the counts against him.

A day before the stabbing, a Hillsboro judge had issued a warrant for Figueroa’s arrest after he failed to show up to Washington County Circuit Court in a 2021 case in which he is charged with identity theft. It was the eighth time a judge issued a warrant in that case because Figueroa has a pattern of not appearing for court dates in that case, prompting law enforcement to arrest him each time and bring him back to jail until he’s released again, usually within days.

Figueroa also has a separate pending Multnomah County Circuit Court case in which he’s charged with stealing cars. He’d failed to appear four times in that case.

His criminal history started in his early 30s and includes convictions for corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant in California and failure to register as a sex offender in Arkansas. He told Multnomah County jail staff a few years ago that he has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and wasn’t taking any medication. Court papers list him as homeless and most recently living near the apartment complex of the victim in Saturday’s stabbing.
