- Molly Kelly, veteran storyteller from National Public Radio’s "The Moth," will be one of the guests at "To Tell The Truth" Sept. 6 in Bend.
A new group of storytellers will gather Sept. 6 for a new edition of Bend’s long-running talk show, “To Tell the Truth,” modeled on National Public Radio’s longstanding storytelling program “The Moth.”
The diverse cast from Central Oregon includes professional comics, a radio personality and a life coach. In 10-minute segments, each will present a tale that ranges from hilarious to heartbreaking, following two simple rules: Their stories should be as true to life as they remember and no notes are allowed. They have only their wit, memory and a mic on which to rely.
The cast of includes Carol Fox, Anthony Poponi, Molly Kelly, Cody Parr, Dave Miller, Cody Micheal, Carol Sternkopf and musical guest Deena Kamm. Dan Cohen, who launched the occasional storytelling programs with local theater director Howard Schor over 10 years ago, will serve as the evening’s host.
“We’re more fragmented as a community than when we started,” he said. “And we’re a lot more diverse than we were back then. But in my opinion, there are way more people who can and want to tell their stories to a group of strangers. We’ve only just scratched the surface.”
The Sept. 6 show will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Unity Spiritual Community of Central Oregon, 63645 Scenic Road, adjacent to the site of the new Costco. are available at bendticket.com/events/to-tell-the-truth-9-6-2024. Some material may not be suitable for younger children, Cohen warned.
“The show’s appeal comes from the totally unpredictable nature of one person standing up in front of a group of strangers,” Cohen said. “Our performers could be your neighbors, but until they get up on stage you might not know anything about their personal lives.”
